Professional Hopes and Goals

My hope in working with families and children from diverse backgrounds is to always remember the value their differences add to the world. Everyone has worth and should be treated with respect.

One goal I would like to set for the early childhood field related to issues of diversity, equity, and social justice is for teachers, administrators and other professionals to be offered consistent training and hands-on ways to use the information they receive in daily activities.

This course has challenged my thinking both personally and professionally.  The discussions were invaluable in that they allowed me to be exposed to different ways of thinking.  The diversity profile acted as a working journal. Enabling me to describe and empower myself with adjectives.  Writing these adjectives somehow made me think about them and give affirmation to my thoughts.

I thoroughly enjoyed discussions with my colleagues and Dr. Williams.  The professional and personal insights given were helpful in understanding the course material.  Thank you all for sharing information that I will be able to use in my career and everyday life.

With each completed class I feel I am building relationships and resources for the future. Good luck to everyone in fulfilling your educational goals.

  2. I could not agree more with you on the fact that teachers and education professionals should have training on diversity, equity and social justice. Training is great but so was the idea of hand on to incorporate in the classroom. I too have grown by the use of the diversity profile/ reflection journal and have learned more about myself because of the journal. I am sure you will do great in whatever you do in life. I have learned a lot from you and the others in our group. Good luck with all you do!

  3. Hi Mary,
I can relate to what you said about the diversity study being a working journal. I learned a lot about myself through this weeks learning and studying about diversity, biases, and preconceived notions. I learned that I am a stronger person than I realized. This course, my discussions with all of my classmates and the blogging has given me so much information that I can use in my life now as well as in the future with my day care when I get it up and running again. I agree with your statement that everyone should be treated with respect. I believe that it is important to treat the children as well as their parents with respect fairness. I am glad that I was able to have this class with you. You added to my learning experience. Take care and God bless you.
