My Family Culture

The three most important things I would take with me after a major catastrophe would be my bible, a family portrait and my phone.

I would explain to the others what my items meant by telling them my bible serves as a source of inspiration and instruction in good and bad times.  My family is my support system and I would like to keep them close thus the photograph. I would take my phone to call other relatives to let them know them know we were alright.  I could possibly use some of my apps to help with any language differences.

If I were told I had to give up 2 of the 3 items, I would be OK with that.  My family is most important to me and the other things are simply extra.

I have experience with adapting to new and different environments.  By currently living in a developing country, you quickly learn what is important and what is not.  What I learned from this assignment is I had a reaction to the part of the assignment that mentioned might having to stay in this location permanently.  Since I am accustomed to moving on a fairly regular basis, the prospect of permanency is unknown and makes me a bit apprehensive.  This apprehension is something I may need to explore further.

  1. Hi Mary,
I also chose my bible as one of the three things that I would bring. I thought of my cell phone however I also thought what about when I need to charge it up. Since I could only bring one of the three I would not be able to bring my phone charger. I chose my bible for many reasons. One reason is of course the spiritual aspect. My faith in God has brought me through some very abusive situations and knowing that God is with me and being able to read my bible is very comforting to me. Another reason I chose my bible is because I love to read and learn. There is a never ending source for me to learn from contained in the bible along with some very interesting stories about some very interesting people. Another reason I chose to take my bible is that it is a source of history as well as a book of poems, songs, parenting education, a book which shows the importance of accepting one another for who and what we are, a book of counseling when I am confused or depressed, and so much more.
I also had a reaction to the part of the assignment that said I and my family might have to stay in the relocation place. If I had to relocate at least it was with my family. I would be scared but I would survive the fear and move on to where ever God has for me to be.
I enjoyed reading your thoughts on this. Thank you.

  2. Mary,
I loved reading the different things people would bring with them if they had to leaver the country. When doing this activity I have learned that nothing replaces people but it would still be a hard choice to leave photos and memories behind of my family. As long as my family was with me we would make it work. I also learned that I take my family culture with me where ever I go, it is always with me. I would be able to teach my children the traditions and characteristics of my culture as long as they are with me. Family first! Thanks for sharing.
